Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. While she was a small girl, she struggled with obsessive-compulsive disorder. She also experienced anxiety because of the word"association. Ford's passion for acting started when she was young. She joined at the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a few weeks, she realized it was not for her. Ford made an application to the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured an interview on her fourth try. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of her classmates. Ford was graduated in 1993, but in the meantime she already had made her TV debut on an episode from 1991 in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". During the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate also performed regularly at the theater, ultimately being a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy style that she started adding to her repertoire in the year 1996, was soon gaining her admiration.
